During training exercises, the intern will have more supervised hands on training to ensure they stay within their work scope. u003cbru003eu003cbru003eThis internship is a part-time position and will last no longer than six months. Must be able to work three (3) days per week, eight (8) hours/day totaling 24 hours/week. u003cbru003eu003cbru003eu003cbu003eESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES u003c/bu003eu003cbru003eu003cbru003eu003culu003enu003cliu003eAssists and supports fire and emergency calls under the direction of the duty supervisor and/or incident commander including but not limited to; lay hoses, carry and set up ladders, and use fire equipment. u003c/liu003e u003cliu003eConducts and administers first aid.u003c/liu003e u003cliu003eObserves and assists in pre-fire and fire prevention inspections.u003c/liu003e u003cliu003eParticipates in drills and training activities.u003c/liu003e u003cliu003eOther responsibilities and duties as assigned.u003c/liu003e u003c/ulu003eu003cbru003eu003cbu003eSKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONSu003c/bu003eu003cbru003eu003cbru003eu003culu003enu003cliu003eCurrently enrolled in Fire Science classes or recently completed a fire academy. u003c/liu003e u003cliu003eMust have basic knowledge of Firefighting, theories and concepts in the field and their practical applications to problems and situations ordinarily encountered.u003c/liu003e u003cliu003eCurrent EMT and CPR certificate.u003c/liu003e u003cliu003eMust have current CPAT or BIDDLE.u003c/liu003e u003cliu003eMust have the ability to provide solutions to routine technical problems.u003c/liu003e u003cliu003eMust have the ability to communicate effectively, in both oral and written applications, which successfully supports other firefighters, employees and management.u003c/liu003e u003c/ulu003eu003cbru003eu003cbu003ePHYSICAL DEMANDSu003c/bu003eu003cbru003eu003cbru003eWhile performing the duties of this position, the employee must be able to work at heights and in confined or restricted spaces aboard vessels under construction/repair. Daily inspections require climbing ladders, working at heights, walking on scaffolding, observing use of tools and operation of equipment/machinery. Physical dexterity must allow for bending, reaching, climbing, crawling, and working on ladders and scaffolding. Must be physically able to walk to all yard locations. Must be able to handle stressful situations. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds of weight. Visual abilities required include close, distance and peripheral vision, depth perception and color recognition. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to vapors, gases, dust, welding/burning fumes, and smoke. Must be able to spend up to 70% of time in an outdoor shipyard environment in all climates. The noise level is usually moderate to extremely noisy 70% of the time, which may include sirens, horns, chipping, and hammering. Must be able to work under stressful conditions and in undesirable atmospheres. Able to accomplish any task with Full PPE including but not limited to full turn outs, helmet and an SCBA. u003cbru003eu003cbru003eu003cbu003eACCOUNTABILITYu003c/bu003eu003cbru003eu003cbru003eEnsures NASSCO's Injury and Illness Prevention Program meets company and regulatory requirements and is effectively implemented.
