This Firefighter (Basic Life Support) position with the Directorate of Emergency Services is located at Fort Belvoir, Virginia.
Ft. Belvoir is approximately 15 miles southwest of Washington, D.C., 5 miles from Alexandria, VA and next door to the community of Mount Vernon, VA. Works as a member of a firefighting crew engaged in the protection of life and property
Administer emergency care during high stress and fire rescue situations.
Provide basic life support treatment to patients as an Emergency Medical Technician.
Respond to aircraft and vehicle emergencies.
Operate firefighting apparatus and equipment for special use, rescue needs and fire prevention.
Direct fire and emergency personnel in responding to medical emergencies to provide care for the sick and injured.
Makes appropriate decisions relative to firefighting and rescue operations in order to preserve life, property and environment.
Occasional travel - You may be expected to travel for this position.

This position requires the employee to have and be able to maintain a valid state driver's license.
This position is covered by the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Program. Employee is required to sign a DA Form 5019-R and MUST pass a urinalysis test prior to appointment and periodically thereafter.
This position requires a pre-employment and annual physical.
This position requires a physical agility test and participation in a cardiovascular fitness program.
This position requires the employee to work 72 hours a week, which includes weekends and holidays and may be subject to recall after normal tour of duty in cases of emergencies.
This position requires the employee to wear uniform and/or protective clothing weighing up to 100 pounds.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience which includes work as a fully trained member of a firefighting crew engaged in the protection of life and property; Respond to fires using firefighting and rescue techniques, equipment and extinguishing agents utilizing trained knowledge of firefighter theory and tools; contaminated and/or hazardous areas requiring the full performance of firefighting tasks to include: building ventilation, fire extinguishing, emergency medical service(s) (EMS) apparatus operation, protective performance techniques as needed in the event to protect life and property. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
Selective Placement Factor:
EMT-Basic or higher certification issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia or the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians; Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Hazardous Materials Awareness & Operations issued by one of the following: Department of Defense (DoD), International Fire Service Accreditation (IFSAC), or National Professional Qualification System (NPQS)/ProBoard.

This position has been identified by Department of Army and approved by the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness as a covered primary, rigorous position for special retirement coverage as identified in 5 CFR 831 Subpart I for CSRS Retirement coverage and 5 CFR 842 Subpart H for FERS retirement coverage.
Maximum Entry Age :
(a) For initial appointments, you cannot have reached your 37th birthday by the day of appointment. (b) If you have passed the designated entry age limit noted, but have previously served in a covered position you may be eligible to re-enter the fire service provided that you: 1) meet all applicable qualifications for the position; and 2) will be able to complete a total of 20 years of covered and creditable Federal firefighter service by the time the Federal firefighter reaches the age of 57. Prior service in covered positions and credit towards retirement may be subtracted from your age to determine if the Federal firefighter meets the maximum entry age.
For reentry into a primary covered position, you must also provide sufficient documentation (SF-50s) to show length of service in a previous covered firefighter position.
This position requires that you possess the Airport Firefighter and Drive Operator Pumper certification issued by one of the following: Department of Defense (DOD) Firefighter Certification System, International Fire service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or National Professional Qualification System (NPQS)/ProBoard OR be able to obtain these certifications within one year of your start date.
