Every FEMA employee has regular and recurring emergency management responsibilities, though not every position requires routine deployment to disaster sites. All positions are subject to recall around the clock for emergency management operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the official duty station, and may include duties other than those specified in the employee's official position description. Travel requirements in support of emergency operations may be extensive in nature (weeks to months), with little advance notice, and may require employees to relocate to emergency sites with physically austere and operationally challenging conditions.
In this position, typical assignments include:
Serving as an emergency management specialist supporting the notification, communication, dissemination of information, and the mobilization / direction of emergency response resource capabilities regarding Federal response to all types of intentional and/or unintentional crises, disasters, other humanitarian emergencies, hazards, or natural and man-made/technological (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, high-yield explosives) incidents.
Performing substantive work to build emergency management and support capabilities, as well as to maintain and ensure the readiness of such capabilities based on an analysis of risk and need.
Resolving typical issues concerning the application of any of FEMA's enabling statutes, pertinent regulations, and/or general laws affecting the operation of the Federal government, particularly those contained in the National Response Framework.
Supporting the conduct of emergency response and preparedness training, exercises, and assistance.

You qualify for this position at the GS-09 level (starting salary $57,510) if you possess the following
One full year of specialized experience at the GS-07 level that demonstrates the basic understanding of the principles and practices of emergency management in order to analyze or evaluate program operations.
Experience must include one or more of the following duties:
1. Using scheduling systems and determining user requirements; and/or
2. Assisting in developing, modifying and providing input to project plans; and/or
3. Working with diverse teams and administrative support duties.
Master's Degree or equivalent graduate degree
2 full years of progressively higher level education leading to such a degree
Combination of education and experience
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills, and provides valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
