EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT TECHNICIAN
12 HOUR SHIFTS
Performs duties to support the Emergency Department and patient care functions. Under
general direction and guidance of an RN or Physician the E.D. Technician functions as an integral part of the
patient care team.
Performing to the level of clinical skill
and preparation provides efficient patient care according to the patient care plan.
High School graduate or equivalent. One (1) year experience in acute hospital setting or on ambulance preferred.
B. Current Idaho CNA license.
C. Current BLS Certification.
D. Current EMT license required or relevant experience in an emergency setting, with completion of EMT or enrollment in a nursing program within one year of hire.
E. Must maintain an affiliation with a Licensed EMS Agency that provides care at an Advanced level or above when EMT license is acquired (Advanced EMT license preferred).
F. IV Certification within 3 months of hire
G. Basic arrhythmia course (will complete within one year of hire).
H. Medical terminology.
I. Computer/PC experience.
J. Ability to use sound judgment and cope with potentially stressful situations.

N. Basic math skills (add, subtract, multiply, divide – figure rates, ratio, and percentage).
Demonstrates Competency in the Following Areas:
Provides supportive care to the Emergency Department patients under the direct supervision of the registered nurse or physician. Communicates appropriately and clearly to the Emergency RN, other coworkers and physicians. Performs approved procedures per policy.
Consults other departments, as appropriate, to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient’s needs.
Obtains, documents and reports vital signs. Reports abnormal results immediately to registered nurse.
Assists RN with admission process of Emergency patients.
Obtains complete demographic information on each emergency patient. Obtains complete billing information.
Records weight measurements on patients age 12 and under.
Places ECG electrodes and attaches ECG monitor correctly.
Performs 12 lead ECG.
Assists with setting up oxygen per instructions.
Assists registered nurse and physicians with assessments, examinations and treatments.
Records I&O, collects specimens, including blood draws and takes specimens to the Clinical Laboratory.
Orders labs and X-rays as directed by RN and physician
Retrieves lab and X-ray reports and brings them to the attention of the ER nurse or physician.
Notifies appropriate licensed personnel when patient complains of pain.
Observes, documents and reports patient condition and changes in condition to the registered nurse.
Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the skills necessary to provide age appropriate care to the patients served. Able to interpret data about the patient’s status in order to identify each patient’s age specific needs and provide care needed by the patient group.
Performs other duties as in serviced, including crutch walking, dressing changes, assisting physician or RN with splint or cast application, Foley insertions and NG insertions.
Performs and/or assists with technical skills as listed: If EMS licensed - primes IV tubing using sterile technique. Initiates O2 therapies as appropriate and directed by emergency physician. If EMS licensed & credentialed in IV initiation and initiation of IV fluid therapy: Performs IV placement and initiates IV fluids in the emergency department when directed by physician on duty. (Must complete required competency training and maintain a log of successful and unsuccessful IV attempts).
Receives and carries out instructions accurately and promptly. All patient care activities are delegated and supervised by the registered nurse or emergency physician.
Transports patients, as necessary. Assists with moving, ambulating and lifting patients.
Documents patient care performed, meeting current standards and policies, including routine vital signs, bedside care and observations.
Communicates in an effective and efficient manner verbally and in all documentation, with coworkers, patients and their families, visitors and physicians.
Answers telephone in a polite manner and communicates information to the appropriate personnel, patient or family member.
Maintains good working relationships both within the department and with other departments.
Responds to patient and visitor questions and needs as immediately as able and within established standards.
Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity.
Interacts professionally with patients and their families and provides explanations and verbal reassurance as necessary.
Maintains patient comfort and privacy.
Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes age appropriate patient safety, follows safety regulations and guidelines, and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
Maintains and prepares rooms between patients and procedures.
Assists with preparation of equipment for procedures. Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.
Monitors stock and restocks supplies as needed. Assists in cost containment through appropriate ordering and conserving of supplies and equipment. Orders supplies under direction of RN.
Helps maintain levels of nurse and physician charting forms.
Maintains an accurate and orderly filing system.
Participates in performance improvement activities.
Logs all patients in the Emergency Department log book.
Demonstrates ability to work effectively as a multidisciplinary team member; supports and assists team members in all activities within approved policies and procedures in the Emergency Department primarily, and in Med/Surg and OB areas secondarily, as needed.
Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, inservices, meetings and workshops; shows responsibility for ongoing education.
Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
